Yamaha’s Helm Master Continues to Steer the Way in 2019

By Capt. Ted Lund

Yamaha Outboard’s fully integrated  Helm Master® joystick steering system led the way in controlling twin, triple and quad installations of high-powered offshore outboards on large boats and 2019 is proving to be no different.

“When I saw the latest version of Helm Master, all I could think about was how it was going to help me catch more fish,” says South Florida captain and Yamaha Pro Staff Member, George Mitchell.

Helm Master allows boaters and anglers to remain in control of their boats at the dock and offshore,” says Mitchell. “But the latest version offers anglers even more control.”

The newest addition to the Helm Master system is known as SetPoint®, which consists of three modes:  Stay Point®, Fish Point®, and Drift Point®.

Helm Master uses a dual antenna GPS, even in heavy seas, to individually maneuver independently-articulated engines while adjusting RPMs to ensure precise movement or station keeping.

Stay Point allows boaters to stay close to a specific point while maintaining position and orientation. It is the perfect setting when fishing for bait around markers or buoys or waiting for a drawbridge to open or a space at the fuel dock.

Fish Point, in either Bow or Stern Mode, with low RPMs allows anglers to work bottom or structure without anchoring. This unique setting will enable anglers to make a stealthy approach and hold position meaning more fish.

But Drift Point is really an option that serious offshore fishermen will appreciate.

“With Drift Point, you get to control the orientation so that the boat drifts in the correct position every time,” says Mitchell. “This is important because thanks to the ability to make micro-adjustments with the joystick, I can make sure I am drifting through the red zone every time.”

Each turn of the joystick allows the captain to tweak their position and orientation in 5-degree increments.

This can be particularly advantageous for boaters drifting live baits on flat lines or kites. Controlling the boat’s orientation during the drift allows anglers to get the maximum spread for their live baits. It also works well when deep dropping for grouper, tilefish, swordfish and other deepwater species holding on to structures or submerged ocean ridges.

All of this is combined with Helm Master’s excellent slow-speed maneuverability in tight corners allowing boaters to operate in even the tightest of confines.
